RECEDING GUMS TREATMENT

Gum recession causes the tissues of the gums to pull away from the teeth. Receding gums are a common condition seen in periodontics. Receding gums can be caused from a gum injury, aggressive brushing, ill-fitting dentures, tobacco use, teeth grinding, or a family history of gum recession. Receding gums can cause the roots of the teeth to become exposed, which can lead to root sensitivity, bone loss, and possible loss of the tooth. We can provide effective gum recession treatments to improve receding gums and to protect a tooth from decay and damage. Treatment of receding gums can also alleviate any pain or inflammation caused by gum recession.

GUM CONTOURING

Gum contouring, which is also known as gum reshaping, is a periodontal treatment that recontours the gum tissue around certain teeth. We can perform gum contouring surgery on several teeth or all of the teeth of the smile, depending on your specific needs. Gum reshaping is a versatile procedure that can be used to remove unhealthy gum tissue or as a cosmetic procedure. Gum contouring is often performed to treat a gummy smile, asymmetrical gums, cleft gums, and enlarged gums.

CROWN LENGTHENING

Crown lengthening is a gum treatment that is performed when too little of the tooth is exposed. Crown lengthening removes excess gum tissue, exposing more of your tooth. Crown lengthening is sometimes performed to correct a gummy smile, which is when excess gum tissue conceals too much of the teeth and makes them appear too small or short. Additionally, we perform crown lengthening to treat a cavity concealed beneath the gum line or to expose more of a tooth that is broken or damaged in order to effectively place a dental crown.

GUM GRAFTING

We perform a gum graft by using healthy gum tissue from a donor location or using a dehydrated tissue such as Alloderm and placing it in areas that may be experiencing receding gums. Gum grafting can promote the healthy generation of gum tissue to treat gum recession. By treating gum recession with a gum graft, the roots of the teeth are protected from harmful bacteria, as well as temperature extremes and other irritants. Gum grafting is a versatile treatment. We can perform gum grafting using allografting techniques, connective tissue grafts, pedicle grafts, and free gingival grafts.

GUM DISEASE TREATMENT

Periodontal disease, which is commonly referred to as gum disease, is an infection of the gums that can cause damage to the teeth and jawbone. Gum disease treatment is designed to treat periodontal disease and restore the health of the gums, teeth, and jawbone. A gum disease treatment can improve the symptoms of gingivitis, periodontitis, and severe periodontal disease. Weoffer gum disease treatments to restore healthy gums.

Frequently Asked Questions

Crown lengthening is a periodontal procedure that can expose hidden portions of the tooth. One of the most common reasons for crown lengthening is to treat a cavity that is hidden beneath the gumline. Removing the gum tissue that covers this cavity allows for proper treatment of the cavity. We also commonly perform crown lengthening for gummy smile correction. A gummy smile happens when too much gum tissue covers your teeth, which makes them look too short or small for your mouth. Crown lengthening can reveal more of a tooth that has broken off near the gumline. Fixing a broken tooth with crown lengthening is typically performed to expose more of the tooth to support a dental crown.

Ideal candidates for crown lengthening are those looking to improve the health and appearance of the smile. Also, someone who needs to restore a tooth may benefit from the procedure allowing the restorative dentist access to the affected area. Other than the gums, patients must be in good oral health to be proper candidates for crown lengthening. Either before or after a crown lengthening surgery, repairs may be required if structural damage is present on the teeth.

Prior to your crown lengthening surgery, dental x-rays may be taken to check the tooth’s structure beneath the gumline. In some cases, extensive teeth cleaning is needed before crown lengthening can be performed. Typically, only local anesthesia is needed during crown lengthening surgery. To begin a crown lengthening treatment, a local anesthetic will be applied to the gums. Once this has taken effect, we will begin removing excess gum tissue around the teeth. Crown lengthening surgery is often performed in under 1 hour.

Following crown lengthening surgery, it is best to rest for the remainder of the day. Sensitivity and discomfort around the surgical site are normal and typically go away within 2-3 days. Generally, over-the-counter pain medication can help ease post-operative discomfort. Until the gums have healed, you should avoid eating overly hot or cold, spicy, or hard food, as these can irritate the gums and surgical site. Gentle brushing will also be required until the gums have healed. Dr. Siddik Malkoc also suggests applying ice packs to help ease pain and reduce inflammation. The periodontist will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions to follow after undergoing a crown lengthening procedure.
